How We Evaluate Supplements, Medications, and Health Interventions
Health & Wellness – Simplified
Modern health decisions are harder than ever.
You’re surrounded by headlines, influencers, ads, clinical studies, and opinions that all claim something is “safe,” “effective,” or “backed by science.” What’s usually missing is context.
Not just does it work, but:
Is it worth the risk when safer alternatives exist?
That is the question the Just Simply Well™ Safety–Benefit Scale was created to answer.
Why This Scale Exist
Most health ratings focus on only one side of the equation.
Some focus only on benefits.
Others focus only on side effects.
Real-world decisions live in the tension between the two.
A medication or supplement can be effective and still be a poor long-term choice.
Another can have mild risks but offer benefits that cannot realistically be achieved any other way.
The Just Simply Well™ Safety–Benefit Scale exists to bring those two forces into balance.
What the Scale Measures
Every intervention we evaluate is judged across two competing dimensions.
1. Potential Harm
This reflects the severity, likelihood, and reversibility of possible negative outcomes.
We consider:
- Severity of side effects
- Risk of long-term or irreversible harm
- Organ system involvement
- Dependency or rebound effects
- Difficulty reversing harm if it occurs
- Quality and duration of available safety data
This is not about fear.
It is about realism.
2. Unique Benefit
This reflects how much benefit an intervention provides that cannot reasonably be achieved through safer alternatives.
We consider:
- Magnitude of benefit
- Speed of benefit
- Whether lifestyle, nutrition, movement, sleep, or coaching could produce similar results
- Whether alternatives are realistic for most people
- Whether the benefit enables something otherwise impossible
This prevents overvaluing speed while undervaluing sustainability.
The Rating Scale (0–5)
Each intervention receives a final Safety–Benefit score, not a moral judgment.
🟢 5 — Strongly Favorable
High benefit
Low risk
No meaningful safer alternative
🟢 4 — Generally Favorable
Clear benefit
Manageable risk
Alternatives exist but are less effective or significantly slower
🟡 3 — Conditional
Moderate benefit
Moderate risk
Safer alternatives exist but require significant effort, time, or compliance
🟠 2 — Caution
Limited unique benefit
Meaningful risk
Comparable outcomes often achievable through safer approaches
🔴 1 — High Risk
Low unique benefit
High or potentially irreversible risk
Safer alternatives clearly exist
🔴 0 — Avoid
Disproportionate risk
Minimal or cosmetic benefit
Better options almost always available
What the Score Means (and What It Doesn’t)
A lower score does not mean something “doesn’t work.”
A higher score does not mean something is right for everyone.
This scale answers one specific question:
Is the benefit worth the risk when safer options exist?
Individual context always matters:
- Medical history
- Goals
- Supervision
- Time horizon
- Willingness to change behavior
Scores inform decisions.
They do not replace them.
